Decent first episode.

– I agree that JK is amazing with introducing characters with very few words. You instantly know and understand the Dursley, Albus and McGonagal.

– Totally thought it was odd to leave harry on the doorstep overnight.

– I’ve always seen the great dichotomy between the Wizarding world rejoicing at the fall of Voldemort and Harry being orphaned and left with his Aunt and Uncle.

– On a producing note, the connection between you two was a bit iffy. Also, the giggling was a bit much at moments.

Something I noticed while I was rereading Chapter 1 — Im not sure whether or not all of the books are published the same, but in my edition the first few pages were written very interestingly. I know you guys mentioned the first chapter wasn’t a real hook line and sinker for some HP beginners. In my edition of the book, I noticed the first three pages explain Vernon and the Dursleys, who are so wildly boring, so the text itself doesn’t really draw you in. BUT the last sentence of pages 1-3 all end in a point that doesn’t let you stop reading. EX:
“The Dursley’s had everything they wanted, but they also had a secret, and their greatest fear was that somebody would discover it.” P.1
“It was on the corner of the street that he noticed the first sign of something peculiar — a cat reading a map.” P.2
“He didn’t see the owls swooping past in the broad daylight,” P.3

I also remember you guys once talking about how Dumbledore understands the universe and why he trusted that everything would work out for Harry before he got to Hogwarts. In Ch.1 Dumbledore “took a golden watch from his pocket… it had twelve hands but no numbers; instead, little planets were moving around the edge. It must have made sense to Dumbledore, though,” just thought that really related to what you guys said. I can’t remember what chapter you mentioned it in though, somewhere between Ch 1-5

I loved this first episode! I love my decision of listening to the audio chapter before coming to your podcast. I don’t remember the books well enough to remember the details and I think it’s great that I’m aware of what you’re refering to. Cute segments at the end of the show.

So glad you found the show and are enjoying the book club now in addition to the crossover episodes! 🙂

You guys were talking about trying to figure out who characters were that weren’t named. I’ve seen a couple theories that the newscaster that does the segment on the owls’ sudden odd behavior is Ted Tonks. When he’s done with the report it says, “The newscaster allowed himself a grin,” and then Jim McGuffin refers to him as Ted. Ted Tonks was a muggleborn so it’s not entirely impossible. Just something fun to think about.
Love the show so far!
