4.22 The Unexpected Task

Giggles abound in one of the silliest chapters of this book as Harry and Ron struggle to find dates for the Yule Ball, Hermione struggles to fight for feminism, and Hagrid struggles to speak like a normal person. This is the 100th episode of the Real Weird Sisters and is therefore a chance for us to, er, let our hair down.

I think a lot of this chapter really doesn’t make Ron look good. He seems to think he deserves to go to the Yule Ball with someone who’s a 10. I’ll acknowledge that a lot of teenagers want to be seen with somebody who they think is gorgeous, which is understandable, but you have to be realistic about your prospects. Someone like Fleur could get nearly any guy she wants. Ron…not so much. Let’s be honest, Ron isn’t a catch. Harry, for as bad as he is with his lack of knowing how to talk to girls, at least has fame and status on his side to help. But Ron is just some average dude who’s honestly not emotionally ready to be in the dating world. Or Harry for that matter, considering next book.

Another thing!

Ron and Hermione are both similar in the sense that they both want validation. Ron in the sense that he comes from a family where the people older than him have all the impressive things and have made their mark, so he has a lot to live up to. And Hermione was not born into magical society and so she wants to be accepted by those who were to feel like she belongs there, which is why she overcompensated so hard in book 1. But there’s a massive difference, between them.

Hermione busts her ass and is always hitting the books to make sure she can stand out and that puts her in the position to receive validation. Ron is more lackadaisical and just hopes good things will come his way without doing much to deserve it. If he wanted to go to the Yule Ball with a hot girl, he should have been out there asking girls left and right from day 1, making attempts to impress them, not just hope someone comes to him.

I think you misuse the term sexism is in this instance. Having an impossible standard for how good looking your date is isn’t sexism. It would only be sexist if Ron was bi-sexual and had a different beauty standard for boys.

Oh my gosh, happy 100th episode! And I love the fact that this chapter is the very first that that the Weird Sisters were ever mentioned.

I just googled guinea fowl too. What an interesting looking bird!

I think it’s funny that Harry is thinking back to his aunt and uncle in formal wear despite the fact that he owns dress robes.

Ha, I never thought of a Hufflepuff girl breaking allegiance to Cedric by asking Harry.

If there was a WWN, you,d totaly be on it!

Snape may have loved Lily, but I don’t think Lily would ever be in love with Snape in that way.

I wonder why Harry has to keep up with his studies if he’s exempted from finals.

The twins should have just used a school owl instead of getting Ron involved.

Way to go, Tim! I liked this one.

I actually don’t remember the Neville dancing scene at all! Martha’s reaction upon recalling was pretty funny.

Kudos to Neville for being successful at getting a date!

The Ginny and Hermione friendship is so sweet. I only saw it properly developed in fanfiction.

I can imagine the Ravenclaws being in advanced classes.
