5.12 Professor Umbridge

Ooh, Crackpot’s feeling cranky! This chapter is a bigger downer than double potions with the Slytherins (and if that means we’re supposed to get to get matey with them, fat chance). Harry just can’t handle Ron and Hermione bickering anymore, he’s mortified when he puts his foot in his mouth with Cho, and he’s livid when Snape vanishes his potion (even though it was no worse than Ron’s or Neville’s…). And just when he thinks his day can’t get any worse, Harry has his first prolonged interaction with the titular character of the chapter. Have a biscuit, listeners, and sit down. It’s going to be a long episode!

I really was always on the side of Seamus when it came to that argument. He was willing to at least hear Harry out regarding what happened in the Maze, but when he asked, Harry immediately got defensive and threw a jab at his mother.

We, the reader know he is absolutely telling the truth, but the public-at-large doesn’t know that. And he doesn’t make himself sound credible when he refuses to explain anything to anybody. And Harry’s mind, it’s either “you agree with me, or you’re stupid.” He’s making himself sound like the attention-seeking crazy person that the papers are portraying him to be. If he was just slightly more cool-headed, he possibly could have gotten the other Gryffindors on his side right from the start. But because he just refused to tell people what happened, he actively makes the situation worse for himself.

For the adults, it’s easy to understand why they refuse to believe him because they already went through the nightmare with Voldemort once and don’t want to believe it can happen again. But as far as the young people are concerned, “Voldemort” is just some kind of bad dream that they aren’t prepared to deal with.

This chapter was insanely long so I’m not surprised to see the runtime of this episode. Too bad I don’t have any biscuits handy…

I was probably on Harry’s side too when it comes to Angelina but I look forward to seeing things from her side this time around. I loved the observation about how Quidditch is no longer his top priority.

It’s too bad we never actually got to see these new dress robes that the twins bought Ron.

Snape really was out of order in his classroom.

Umbridge’s way of teaching would probably suit the Ravenclaws best.

Lol, Martha’s Peeves impression has to be one of my favourites.

‘Have a wot?!’ I love RWS memes.
