Breaking Down JK Rowling’s Transphobia from a Geek Culture Perspective with Jessie Gender

Jessie Gender

Jessie Earl (@jessiegender) of the Jessie Gender YouTube channel joins Alice and Martha to analyze JK Rowling’s transphobic views through a geek culture lens and discuss ways fans can distance themselves from these harmful ideologies without fully losing Harry Potter. Jessie, Martha and (sort of) Alice also talk Star Trek, including a mini Sorting Hat and a recasting of the Hogwarts professors.

Starting off by saying this is the first of your podcasts I’ve listened to and it was fun! I like what you do here. And hearing more of Jessie’s thoughts on Harry Potter as a franchise is always nice, especially with all the soul-searching I’ve been doing about it.

I also wanted to say that I also had that weird false memory of both Creevey brothers dying, and I have NO idea where it came from but I’m glad I’m not the only one lol

I’m really glad that you didn’t shy away from taking about these topics with everything that happened. Sharing your platform is such a great move as allies.

I would rather have Trelawney predict my doom since everyone will take it as a joke. I think Diagonally is a lot more fun. And I’m sure you can get Butterbear at The Leaky Cauldron.

I only watched the recent Star Trek movies so I’m glad that I was able to follow along. The Hogwarts teachers game was fun even for someone who doesn’t know the fandom too well.
